A Personal Tour of Palm Cottage

As you turn onto this quiet corner in Moultrie’s historic district, you’ll quickly understand why Palm Cottage has become the flagship home of Kirk Murphy Hospitality. Palm Cottage shares this peaceful neighborhood with its two neighboring properties, Wren House and Magnolia Cottage. Each home can be enjoyed individually, or families and larger groups often reserve two or even all three homes together while still enjoying their own private spaces.

Although you’re only about five blocks from Moultrie’s courthouse square, the neighborhood feels surprisingly peaceful. Wide sidewalks invite you to walk downtown for breakfast at Beans & Strings, lunch at Three Crazy Bakers, or dinner at Rocco’s. During special community events such as the Christmas Parade and Homecoming Parade, the parade route forms just outside the house, giving guests a front-row seat to one of Moultrie’s favorite traditions while still returning to a quiet neighborhood once the festivities are over.

As you arrive, you’ll find convenient parking beside the cottage, with additional parking nearby if needed. Palm Cottage occupies the corner of the property, giving it an open feeling and several inviting outdoor spaces. A covered side porch provides a comfortable place to enjoy your morning coffee or relax with a glass of wine in the evening, while decks off both the kitchen and the primary bedroom overlook the private courtyard, creating several places to enjoy South Georgia’s pleasant weather throughout the day.

Stepping through the front door, you’re greeted by a small foyer before the home opens dramatically into the living room. One of the first things guests notice is the soaring vaulted ceiling. Interestingly, none of these vaulted ceilings existed when we purchased the house. Originally, every room had standard eight-foot ceilings. During the renovation we made the decision to vault the living room first, and the transformation was so dramatic that we continued the vaulted ceilings into both bedrooms and even the guest bathroom. That single design decision completely changed the personality of the cottage, making it feel bright, spacious, and full of character while preserving its intimate scale.

At the far end of the living room, a beautiful decorative fireplace anchors the space and reminds visitors of the home’s historic roots. While the fireplace is not operational, it remains an important architectural feature that adds warmth and charm to the room.

Beyond the living room, large openings naturally guide you into the dining room, which truly serves as the heart of Palm Cottage. Whether you’re gathering for dinner, spreading out a board game after a day at Moss Farms, or simply catching up over coffee, this space comfortably brings everyone together.

The dining room flows into one of our favorite rooms in the house—the kitchen. Bright windows fill the room with natural light, highlighting the warm acacia wood countertops, generous island seating, and thoughtful layout that makes preparing meals both easy and enjoyable. Just beyond the kitchen is a small dedicated workspace tucked into its own corner, providing a quiet place to catch up on work or plan the next day’s activities. From here, sliding glass doors open directly onto the rear deck and private courtyard, allowing indoor and outdoor living to blend together effortlessly.

Returning to the hallway off the dining room, you’ll find the laundry area conveniently located between the bedrooms. The guest bedroom features a queen-size bed beneath another vaulted ceiling, while the nearby hall bath serves both guests and visitors. The primary suite offers a king-size bed, its own private bath, another decorative fireplace, and direct access to the rear deck. Ceiling fans throughout the home help keep air moving comfortably while adding to the relaxed cottage atmosphere.

One detail that often makes guests smile is the home’s name. When we began restoring the cottage, the exterior lacked much architectural identity. During the renovation we introduced board-and-batten siding, cedar shake accents in the gables, and custom shutters featuring palm tree cutouts. Those palm silhouettes became the inspiration for the name Palm Cottage and have since become one of its most recognizable features.

Palm Cottage also shares a bit of history with neighboring Wren House. Both homes were originally built in the late 1940s to provide housing for servicemen returning home after World War II. Preserving that history while thoughtfully updating the homes for modern travelers became one of our guiding principles throughout the renovation. We wanted guests to enjoy the charm of a historic South Georgia cottage without sacrificing the comfort and convenience expected today.

If you’re curious about that transformation, visit @RenovatingMoultrie on Instagram and scroll back through the renovation photographs. You’ll see Palm Cottage evolve from a modest post-war cottage into the welcoming home you’ll experience today.

Whether you’re visiting Moultrie for a diving competition at Moss Farms, a wedding, medical training, business, or simply a relaxing getaway, we hope Palm Cottage feels less like a vacation rental and more like a home you look forward to returning to each evening.
