The Thomasville & Pebble Hill Plantation Loop
For many visitors, Thomasville makes the perfect day trip from Moultrie. The drive itself offers a glimpse into the agricultural landscape that defines much of South Georgia before gradually transitioning into the pine forests and historic plantations of the Red Hills region.
Begin your morning in Moultrie with breakfast and a leisurely drive south to Thomasville. Upon arrival, spend some time exploring the city’s historic neighborhoods, where beautiful homes, tree-lined streets, and carefully preserved architecture reflect Thomasville’s long history as a winter destination for wealthy northern families.
No visit is complete without seeing the famous Big Oak, one of the most photographed landmarks in South Georgia. From there, continue into downtown Thomasville and stroll along Broad Street, often called “The Bricks” because of its historic brick-paved streets. The walkable downtown district is filled with shops, galleries, and local restaurants.
For lunch, consider one of Thomasville’s favorite dining destinations:
• Jonah’s Fish & Grits
• Liam’s Restaurant
• Sweet Grass Dairy Cheese Shop
After lunch, make the short drive to Pebble Hill Plantation. Once one of the most prominent sporting plantations in the region, Pebble Hill offers visitors a fascinating look at the history, architecture, art, and outdoor traditions that shaped the Red Hills area. Guided tours of the estate provide an excellent way to spend an afternoon.
As the day winds down, return to downtown Thomasville for dinner, perhaps choosing one of the restaurants you didn’t visit earlier in the day. The evening atmosphere along Broad Street is particularly enjoyable before making the relaxed drive back to Moultrie.
Allow a full day for this excursion. Between the historic homes, downtown shopping, excellent dining, and Pebble Hill Plantation, many guests find themselves wishing they had planned even more time in Thomasville.
